Dr Heddwen Brooks, has been awarded $1.53 million from the National Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood to study postmenopausal hypertension.
Hypertension is the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women, and severity and incidence of hypertension increases in women after menopause. Use of anti-hypertensives in postmenopausal women is less efficacious than in men; 64% of women with postmenopausal hypertension do not have adequate blood pressure control.
Dr. Brooks and Dr. Janko Nikolich Zugich, Professor and Head of the Department of Immunobiology will examine how the immune system is activated to increases in blood pressure across the transition from perimenopause to menopause.
