Several faculty members from the Department of Physiology were recognized for excellence in teaching in the 2026 College of Medicine–Tucson Awards, which honor outstanding faculty across the college.
Among this year’s honorees were physiology faculty who received Academy of Medical Education Scholars (AMES) awards for their contributions to undergraduate and medical student education.
AMES Vernon and Virginia Furrow Excellence in Teaching Awards
The Vernon and Virginia Furrow Excellence in Teaching Awards recognize outstanding achievements in education at the College of Medicine–Tucson. This year’s recipients included two faculty members from the Department of Physiology:
- Claudia Stanescu, PhD — Excellence in Basic Science Teaching, Medical Student Curriculum
- Allyson Roof, PhD — Excellence in Teaching, Undergraduate Curriculum
AMES Awards
The AMES awards recognize outstanding achievements in education by early-career faculty members. Physiology faculty honored with AMES awards include:
- Mattie Klass, PhD — Excellence in Basic Science Teaching, Undergraduate Curriculum
- Dan McNabney, PhD — Excellence in Basic Science Teaching, Medical Student Curriculum
