Dr. Lihua Marmorstein, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology / Vision Science at the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine has been awarded $ 1.1 million by the NIH National Eye Institute to study EFEMP1 and drusen formation in the retina.
These studies will lead us to a comprehensive understanding of drusen genesis and the role of fibulin-3 in inherited and potentially age-related macular degeneration. If the hypothesis is validated, fibulin-3 may be targeted for intervention in drusen formation at the earliest stages in macular degeneration.
