Nicholas Delamere Elected to AAMC Leadership Position

Nicholas A. Delamere, PhD, head of the Department of Physiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, has been elected to a leadership position in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Professor Delamere will serve a three-year term on the Administrative Board of the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS).

The CFAS represents medical school faculty and academic societies within the governance of the AAMC. CFAS provides faculty and society representatives an opportunity to be heard at a national level on a variety of issues critical to academic medicine. CFAS includes more than 300 faculty representatives appointed by member medical schools and academic societies. 

Delamere is the senior representative to CFAS from the Association of Chairs of Departments of Physiology and has served since 2016. CFAS activities are led by the elected 15-member Administrative Board, whose chair and chair-elect sit on the Board of Directors of AAMC.

“It is an honor to serve as a member of the Administrative Board of CFAS,” Delamere said. “At this time, it is important for faculty and the AAMC to communicate on issues like diversity and inclusion, burnout, wellness and resilience. Preparing undergraduates to become successful medical students is particularly important.” 

Professor Delamere joined the University of Arizona faculty in 2006.  He is past president of the Association of Chairs of Departments of Physiology (ACDP) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). He leads an ocular physiology research laboratory that studies eye diseases, including cataract and glaucoma.
