My name is Yanetza Jaime, and I am junior majoring in Physiology and Medical Sciences at the University of Arizona. This semester, I completed my internship at University of Arizona Cancer Center, where I had the opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience while expanding both my professional and personal growth. This internship gave me the chance to work closely with nurses, medical assistants, and providers in a real healthcare setting, where I learned the importance of teamwork, patient communication, and adaptability. Every day was different, and I learned how to stay organized and flexible while meeting the demands of the clinic.
My main responsibilities included assisting with patient preparation, ensuring reusable instruments were properly processed, and helping maintain patient safety standards. I quickly learned that even the smallest details play a major role in patient satisfaction and quality care. These daily responsibilities taught me accountability and attention to detail while also helping me gain confidence in handling tasks independently.
One of the biggest takeaways from this experience was realizing how much I enjoy connecting with patients and supporting them through their medical visits. Seeing how healthcare professionals collaborate to provide the best patient care inspired me to continue pursuing my goal of becoming a Physician Assistant or Medical Doctor specializing in women’s health.
Throughout the internship, I developed a variety of skills that will help me in my future career. I strengthened my communication, multitasking, and time management abilities, and learned how to work well under pressure. I also improved my confidence in professional settings thanks to the feedback I received from my supervisor. She described my performance as excellent, highlighting my dependability, positive attitude, and professionalism, while also encouraging me to work on visibility and confidence in team interactions.
This internship truly confirmed my passion for healthcare and my desire to continue making a difference in patients’ lives. My advice for other Physiology students is to take every opportunity seriously and step out of your comfort zone. Even when tasks seem small, every experience helps you grow and prepares you for the next step in your career. Always stay open to feedback and remember that confidence grows with practice and patience.
